Pulsing picture with PVR250
jschefdog:
I also see the pulsing video when watching on WinTV 2000. However, I haven't noticed it when viewing the recorded files written to a DVD.
bspencer:
You can easily see this "pulsing" effect if you connect a camcorder to the "S-Video/Composite" input and don't play anything. You will very easily see a "pulsing" by just watching the blank screen. The real question is, does this pulsing affect the quality of the capture?
jschefdog:
I see this pulsing when I watch WinTV 2000 on the PC, but so far have not seen it in a recorded file written to DVD and played on the PC or standalone player hooked to a TV. Occasionally I seen a brightness shift in the DVD, but it is kind of random and may be coming from the cable signal I am using to record.
Detritus:
From what I can tell, the recorded files actually are affected.
HOWEVER, this does not necessarily show when played back.
It very much depends on what Software is used to play it back. Using PowerDVD, the pulsing is not visible. Using Hauppauge's own MPEG2 software decoder it is visible. I have no hardware decoders at hand (which use some kind of software, too..:) )
So my guess would be that it will be visible on some home DVD players while not on others.
I looked at the recorded material frame by frame and have confirmed that it is in the recorded material.

I may have discovered something interesting about the brightness shifts I see. It seems that I don't get them in the recorded files IF I minimize the WinTV Window while recording. People who see the pulsing in the recorded files might want to try this, but you will have to play back through something other than WinTV to tell. Start a recording and let it run about 10-15 minutes, then minimize and let it run another 10-15. It seems odd that having the WinTV window open would affect what is recorded by the on-chip encoder, I thought the recording happened upstream from the decode/display.
The only problem is there is no way to minimize the Window for scheduled recording. I tried setting up a batch file using "start /m" to call WinTV with the recording options. It starts minimized, but for some reason WinTV will not start a recording in the minimized state. As soon as you restore the Window it will start recording. I also tried using a shortcut which starts minimized, but same problem. Trying to figure out if there is some way to run a second scheduled task to minimize the Window after it starts.
