WinTV Applications, Drivers CD > WinTV version 7
Problems & Feedback
(1/1)

Yesterday purchased WinTV HVR850 -
Windows XP Professional SP3 on notebook computer (HP DV6T)
First issues with the new WinTV7 (also with WinTV6):
1) The CD's starter program won't run at all with DEP (Data Execution Prevention) enabled. Throws an exception error / memory violation. For what is only a front-end launcher of other software, I would think a good developer wouldn't have this issue!
2) The install program - again this is with both WinTV6 & 7 - must be replacing Windows system files in an "unauthorized" manner - Windows complains immediately:
Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. Insert your product CD-ROM now.

What files are being replaced, why, and are the replaced files necessary for proper running of the software?
These 2 issues really give me a dim view of the company/the developers/the software. Seems rather basic to me.
Now, the software itself - I for one find it anything but easy and intuitive.
THIS IS A BIG ONE: I have my Windows Start Bar VERTICALLY at the RIGHT EDGE of my widescreen notebook. (this works much better than bottom of scree for efficient use of screen/space) But, WinTV doesn't take this into account and thinks the entire width of the screen - including the start bar - is available to the application. So it basically just doesn't display correctly. Again, this is a rather basic Windows/display design premise.
Some of the icons don't make sense, why can't mouse-over bring TEXT as to what the icon is? OK at least I've found the manual but really.....
I find it REALLY REALLY REALLY difficult to go to back or forward in recording or live TV with just the fixed-length arrow, and the seemingly disappearing slider control which is smaller than a non-functional(?)slider display.
Sound level is too low at max.
I don't understand how I can schedule a recording - or where to I find a guide of programs? Does the WinTV software have to be running all the time for a scheduled recording to take place? Does that mean I have to mute the audio and minimize the window to avoid seeing the program while it is being recorded?
I can't even find a user guide. (Sorry - found the guide on the Wintv page)
And, when I click on help, the program errors. (I downloaded from website)
If I'm watching live TV and click record, why don't I have the option to just record the program I'm watching until it ends, or some fixed length of time instead of indefinitely until disk space runs out or I click the record button again?

Additional problems/bugs/questions now that have been using a little longer ---
Bug: Scheduler - EDIT - when click edit an existing schedule, the channel changes in the initial dialog to the first available channel - so if this isn't the channel that was set for the schedule, and one doesn't notice, when saved, the channel the schedule is set to record on is changed and WRONG!
Inconsistency - The scheduler has no tab for program schedule as shown on the website / and pdf instructions for wintv7
Bug - Windows exception errors galore - especially when dragging the display window from one monitor to another on multi-monitor XP/SP3 system
Bug - When I double-click to change window mode on live tv, not only does the screen mode change, the video goes from live to TV to some arbitrary point in the livetv buffer (not always)
Feature Request - ok, i want to schedule a program to be recorded [daily] and have the computer go into standby when finished. But, if I happen to be using the computer, it sure would be nice to have a way to temporarily override that!
How do I? - sometimes I get a .bmp file of a screen capture in my video directory. How does this happen? Is there a way to do it when I WANT a screenshot? And can it be saved in a more efficient format instead of a space-hogging .bmp?
