HVR 1600 video/audio freezing up with WinTV after a few minutes
« on: November 01, 2009, 09:39:54 AM »
I have had a 1600 for a couple of years now and have had issues with it freezing up in WinXP Pro SP3 with the WinTV2000 software.  I am using version 3.4d.  I have tried other versions, including Wintv V6, 3.3b, 4.2, and 4.8a, but still have the same issue.

With OTA broadcasts (ATSC), not with the cable hookup,  it will run fine for a few minutes(usually 3-5) and then the video & audio will start to stutter, and it finally just freezes the image and I get no audio.  If I change the channel, the same thing will happen.  The video & audio will be perfect for a few minutes, and then freeze up again.

I thought it might be a heat issue, so I bought a case fan and pointed it directly at the card, but that has not helped.

I have played around with Win7 and I do not experience the problem with MC - the card will display perfect audio and video.
I'm not quite ready to jump to Win7.

Does anyone know of any work-arounds for this?  Background recordings are always fine.

Thank you for your reply.

I have:
Asus M2A-VM motherboard - I'm not sure of the current bios version, I did have to update it after losing the onboard LAN a while back

AMD 4000+ w/4 gigs ram
EVGA 9400GT video (1 Gig)
Audio is onboard(realtek ), and there are no other cards installed in the system.

Another note, I've had the video card for about 6 months, but I've had the freezing issue since before the video card, so I've ruled that out.

The only software that I use that I thought would conflict is Nero 7, but I've tried clean installing XP without Nero and still run into the same problems.

I've also tried the various Primary.exe settings, but if anything that makes it worse.

Has anyone else run into this type of freezing with this card?  I also picked up an 850 usb stick for a laptop, but even as hot to the touch that gets, it runs very smoothly with ATSC signals.
Any idea you can throw my way are appreciated, as I gave up researching this, and have just lived with it for a while.

Wow, I feel dumb.

That solved the issue.

I also tried with 3 sticks of ram (each is 1 gig), and now the stuttering just occurs with the audio, the video remains fine throughout.

Do you know what causes this issue, and if there is anyway to keep the full 4 gigs?  I know XP doesn't utilize the full 4, but this was originally a Vista machine and I downgraded to XP.  I don't really use the WinTV to watch a lot of live TV, but would like to use it without the freezing.

Also, just to clarify I had no issues with Nero 7 causing the problem with WinTV.

Thank you again for your assistance!

That why it good idea to just move to Windows 7 64bit OS unlike the 32bit OS
If your Video card had been 512MB then you could have used 3GB how ever being your card has 1GB that can still cuases problem with 3GB with 1GB Video that push pass 4GB if you facter in all the other I/O memory in the system.
You could try the XP 3GB switch in the boot.ini but I wouldn't count on that working any better
See this page http://www.vfxpedia.com/index.php?title=FAQ/3GB_Switch

You may want re-build to something better

Being you can't upgrade that motherboard that much and take you have small case
This cheap way to go and be far more powerful later on with better CPU
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H or GA-MA78LM-S2 or GA-MA78LM-S2H
Reused your Memory and CPU for now then later on upgrade to Phenom II X3 720 or more powerful Phenom II X4 955

2 option
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT or GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H
Phenom II X3 720 or more powerful Phenom II X4 955
DDR3 1333 or faster

The 3GB switch is something I haven't heard about before.  I will give it a shot in a couple of days to see if it works.

All of the applications I use are fine in XP and the video capturing/live TV is the only real reason I have to upgrade to Win7.

Once again, thank you for your assistance.
