HVR 2250 in PCIe 8x slot

(1/1)

BostonDriver:

Hi,

This is my first PCIe motherboard (well, other than video cards).   From what I read, a PCIe 1x card such as the HVR 2250 can plug into a 4x, 8x etc. slot, but run at 1x speed.  Can someone confirm this is the case?

Does the fact that my 8x slot is wired at 4x change anything?

I'm double checking because I have a PVR-350 today.  The motherboard also has PCI-X slots.  In theory the PVR-350 should work in the PCI-X slot, but people I've talked to who have tried this report problems.  (If anyone wants to discuss, I'll start a topic in the PVR-350 area.)

Thanks.

DrP:
All else being equal it should work fine.  The 4x, 8x refers to the number of 'lanes' - each carries 2.5Gbit/sec IIRC.  There is no speed change.  Ihave a HVR2200 sitting in a 4x slot and it works with no particular issue.

These graphics cards are for desktop computers. I'd be surprised if you could upgrade the graphics in your laptop at all. It's usually the odd Dell laptop that allows graphics upgrading.

So, to answer your question, no it wouldn't fit.

If you want to seriously get into gaming, get yourself a desktop rig.
