WinTV-HVR 850/950/950Q stick (Model 65xxx, 65301, 111xxx, 72001, 72301) > General Discussion (HVR-850/950)
Just bought HVR950 - disappointing
philakid:
For whatever reason, the CD that comes with this device is not readable in my Toshiba Laptop - in that PC (Matshita Drive) the CD appears empty. I had to copy the CD to Hard Disk on another PC and transfer to the Toshiba.
But my reason for disappointment is the following. My cable company provides basic analog service (channels 2-99) but also sends the OTA digital channels (i.e., 4-1, 4-2, 50-1) some of which are HD. I do not have digital service from my cable company. My Panasonic Plasma TV has both an NTSC and ATSC tuner and when it scans the channels it finds analog 2-99 and then finds many DT channels. I have at least 6 HD channels, and digital channels starting at 4-1 and going as high as 115-50.
Therefore, I was expecting the HVR-950 to find both analog and digital channels just using my basic cable as inpuit. But when it was done scanning, it reported zero digital services found.
It appears that I could have gotten away a lot cheaper with just an analog PC TV Tuner.Recorder - as this device does not appear to be able to handle OTA digital channels when delivered by the cable company.

I think the HVR950 is not design Cable only AIR Broadcast Antenna but I pass this on to hauppauge

Ok just got word back with the info you needed
There is something called 'Clear QAM' which is where the cable operator sends digital signals 'in the clear' on their cable network.
The WinTV-HVR-950 does not support clear QAM. It only supports 'over the air' ATSC.
philakid:
Thanks - are there any hardware products that do support Clear QAM? Preferably USB but will consider PCI
